DLA member develops a nasty hobbit

It’s got the whole industry Tolkien about it

Working as a dental technician is not always about cosmetic improvement, sometimes, and more often than you think, people actually want to look mean and ugly.

This is what DLA member Mr M. K. Ehyaii, of Capital Dental Laboratory in London, was tasked with doing when he was asked to make two sets of crowns for the theatre production of Lord of the Rings.

Left to his own devices, Mr Ehyaii designed and manufactured both sets of teeth using his skill as a technician and his research of the film to create the final products.

Taking just two weeks to produce, Mr Ehyaii began by surveying the impressions he received then waxing them. He then cast the wax moulds in chrome to create the crown like fittings to match the actors’ teeth. Mesh retainers were set behind the teeth, which were then covered in flexible acrylic flexite. Both sets of crowns were finally trimmed and polished, ready for the theatre effects team to paint if they wished.

This is not the first time that Mr Ehyaii’s skills as an acrylic prosthetics specialist have been called upon for entertainment purposes and with work in the pipeline for an undisclosed film next year, it certainly won't be the last.
